Creting a New Method for Manufacturing Concertina Buttons

January, 2022 → Now!
  • Basic Explaination

At my old Job at Carroll Concertinas, there was this very difficult part on one of the buttons on the instrument that required using a lathe and a drill press. It took way too much time and there needed to be several of these parts Using my knowledge of 3D printers, I thought of a better way to make this part using 3D printers. I started my research into it by getting the original engineering drawing and recreating the part in Fusion360 and creating an updated engineering drawing (shown below). I created a new engineering drawing and exported the file to do structural modeling on it. I simulated several different force loads on the button. I found that ABS is too weak for this application, especially regarding the sharp points. I optimized it as best as I can and decided to use a resin 3D printer as I have more experience, and they can produce much stronger parts. I found a very strong resin which in the past I used to 3D print pressure vessels for my pneumatic baseball bat. This project is still ongoing and hopefully I will have it fully implemented by the end of the year.
